Underdrawing

Once we have all our supplies, we gotta sketch out what we wanna draw!

So whenever I’m doing my watercolor paintings I want to think about a few things.

  • 1. Is that I want to have a main idea or focal point, the first thing that we’re gonna show the viewer, um because I’m gonna be doing something kind of simple with this one, it might not be as like, ground breaking or as exciting as you might think. um, but I’m gonna think about something I’m gonna put on my piece that’s really gonna pop so that’s gonna be my foreground, and it’s gonna be my focal point, my point of emphasis. So that’s the first thing.

  • 2. The second thing that I’m gonna do is think about the mid-ground that’s the in between layers, so, for the midground for this one I think I’m gonna be doing something that’s mystical and desert-y which is kind of my vibe lately. And then I’m gonna move on to doing the background. So when I’m painting it will make a lot more sense for how I work, from the BACK to the FRONT or with watercolor sometimes I’ll work Front to Back, I usually do biggest to smallest. But I’m always reserving that space for the thing that’s going in the front, that’s why I’m making sure I have the thing in the front drawn first.

For the sake of this project I’m going ot be doing something horizontal because that’s best captured on film, but just remember that you can always rotate your paper tall or wide whatever works best for you.

  • Start by doing a super soft outline.

  • Great idea to use references!

  • Keep it simple, Enjoy the process!

  • Consider what you want to show and colors you might want to use later.

  • Do you want it grounded or floating?

  • Follow the rule of thirds, horizon line should be 1/3 from bottom or top.

  • Follow your intuition.

  • Erase pencil if you want it to be hidden under watercolor paint (remember it’s translucent)

  • Work in elements of three.

  • Contrast size of objects.

  • Break complex ideas or objects into more basic shapes!

  • The sooner you can switch from pencil to watercolor paint the better, THIS IS NOT A DRAWING IT’S A WATERCOLOR PAINTING!

  • Next video is background and we’re starting with biggest to smallest.
