Val Vista Lakes Traditional Wedding by Travel Photographer Jennifer Lind Schutsky

Paul and Nicole said “I do” at the beautiful Val Vista Lakes Event Clubhouse in Gilbert, Arizona, and this venue truly feels like a hidden tropical escape in the middle of the desert. For couples searching for a Phoenix wedding photographer, Gilbert wedding photographer, or the best wedding venues in Arizona, Val Vista Lakes offers a unique waterfront setting that feels more like a private resort or lakeside retreat than a traditional Arizona venue.

I love photographing weddings at Val Vista Lakes because the venue has a little bit of everything. The upstairs bridal suite itself is somewhat small, but just outside of the getting-ready space is a large, open seating area filled with gorgeous natural light. This setup works perfectly for wedding mornings because the actual bridal suite can quickly become crowded with makeup artists, dresses, bags, and all the excitement of getting ready. Having that clean, bright overflow space allowed us to capture elegant bridal portraits and candid getting-ready moments in a polished, uncluttered environment.

As a wedding photographer in Phoenix, Arizona, lighting and flow are everything when documenting a wedding day, and Val Vista Lakes photographs beautifully from every angle. The ceremony space overlooks the water, creating a peaceful waterfront backdrop that feels destination worthy and romantic. Between the grand entryway, the clubhouse architecture, and the outdoor views, the entire property gives the feeling of stepping into your own private resort away from the Arizona heat.

After the ceremony, we snuck away for portraits near the waterfall area. Although the waterfall itself was under construction during this wedding date, the surrounding bridges, stairways, and tucked-away pathways still created stunning opportunities for intimate bride and groom portraits away from guests. These quieter moments are always some of my favorite parts of the wedding day to photograph.

The reception flowed seamlessly into all the classic wedding moments like grand entrance, first dance, speeches, and candid celebrations with family and friends. Nicole also chose to do a first look with her dad, and his reaction was absolutely priceless. Moments like these are why I love being a documentary-style wedding photographer. I never take for granted the privilege of witnessing such emotional and meaningful family connections.

One of the most memorable parts of the day was when Paul surprised everyone by bringing their dog to the reception. Nicole, who works as a therapist, has a beloved therapy dog (in training) who is just such an important part of their lives. Watching him interact with guests and be included in the celebration brought so much personality and joy to the evening. They even created a signature cocktail named after him, which you know I love and is a perfect example of how intentional details make a wedding feel personal and unforgettable.

As a creative wedding photographer in Arizona, I love when couples incorporate meaningful elements that reflect who they truly are. From waterfront portraits to emotional family moments and playful personal touches, Paul and Nicole’s wedding day was filled wi
