As a non-traditional and counter-culture wedding photographer, my lens is always looking for a way to break standard rules. But what I love most is when a couple takes a deeply traditional celebration and infuses it with so much raw, visceral life that it becomes something entirely its own.
That is exactly what went down for this gorgeous November wedding at Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek, Arizona. Even though their day was beautifully rooted in traditional Mexican culture, the energy, the unpredictable desert weather, and my own dramatic, edgy approach to lighting and posing turned it into an absolute masterpiece. Even when a wedding leans into classic traditions, my approach as a photographer stays edgy, contrast-heavy, and unscripted.
Dramatic Lighting & Flat-Lays (below): For the details and flat-lays, I skipped the airy, bright style and focused on dramatic, high-contrast lighting to let the textures of the day stand out. Incorporating elements of the reception into the after party vibes of the shot.
Wide-Angle Ceremony Framing: During the outdoor ceremony, I leaned into my wide-angle lens. It allows me to pull back and capture the grand scale of the couple against the environment, creating an immersive, voyeuristic, alternative feel rather than just standard close-up portraiture.
Documenting the Collective, Not Just the Couple: Posing the couple takes a few tries to get a natural look, and I love giving them the buffer time to just breathe and look at each other. But I refuse to ignore the guests. Your wedding isn't just about two people; it's about the entire community that showed up to hold space for you. I made it a point to capture the raw, candid reactions of the people attending—the laughter, the tears during the vows, and the chaotic joy of the rain-soaked dance floor.
The Elements: Chicano Culture Meets November Rain
Let’s talk about the weather first. November in Arizona is usually a safe bet, but nature had other plans for us. It was sprinkling on and off throughout the morning, but thankfully, the clouds held back and took a perfect little break right as the outdoor ceremony began.
The day was incredibly rich with Chicano-inspired details and vibrant Hispanic culture. Guests were greeted by the triumphant sounds of a live mariachi band, and instead of a basic dessert table, the reception featured an incredible spread of traditional pan dulce, Mexican breads, and pastries. During the reception, they hosted a high-energy dollar dance where family and friends crowded the dance floor to pin dollars on the bride and groom. It was a beautiful testament to legacy, family, and celebration.
After the ceremony, everyone moved inside the venue's grand space for dinner, but we migrated back out to the open-air patio for dancing. Right at the end of the night, the skies opened up again. Instead of running for cover, this amazing couple and their guests embraced it. Everyone was out on the floor, completely drenched, dancing in the rain under the glowing bistro lights. It was effortlessly poetic, cinematic, and so much fun.
