How to Take Dreamy Photos Across my Favorite Historic City, Travel Photography with Tips and Tricks for Every Camera Type
1. Explore during Golden Hour
The soft light just after sunrise or before sunset makes every shot more cinematic and warm— especially around Barcelona’s landmarks.
2. Use a Wide-Angle Lens for Iconic Views
A 24mm or 35mm lens captures the scale of Barcelona’s architecture — perfect for the Gaudi Architecture, Fountains, or Arc de Trimph. If you’re using an iPhone, switch to the 0.5x ultra-wide setting for similar results.
3. Play with Depth Using a Prime Lens or Tilt Shift Lens
A 50mm f/1.8 lens (often called the “nifty fifty”) gives you sharp subjects with dreamy blurred backgrounds — ideal for portraits and travel moments. Search: “best travel lenses for Canon / Nikon / Sony.” I also travel with my tilt shift lens similar to my 50mm because it’s light and compact and gives a dreamy element to the photographs.
4. Try Time-Lapse or Slow-Mo on iPhone
Apps like Lapse or Halide make it easy to shoot time-lapses of busy piazzas or moving clouds. Slow motion works beautifully for fountains or street performers. Pro tip: use a mini tripod or lean your phone on a stable surface.
5. Pack Light & Think Versatile
Bring just one prime lens (I suggest 35mm or 50mm), or a compact film or point-and-shoot camera. Less gear means more mobility — and more creativity.
6. Shoot Film for Texture & Timeless Vibes
A 35mm point-and-shoot film camera like the Olympus Stylus or Canon Sure Shot captures nostalgic tones. Film grain often enhances street scenes and ancient textures — something digital can’t quite replicate.
7. Use Burst Mode for Action & Crowds
Whether it’s pigeons flying in Plaça Catalunya or kids running through a fountain, burst mode ensures you capture the perfect frame without missing movement.
8. Look for Symmetry & Leading Lines
Barcelona’s architecture is full of balance and organic shapes — arches, columns, and cobblestone streets make great visual guides. Search: “composition tips for travel photography.” Gaudi keeps the Architectural rules in place while merging modern and art nouveau, explore these details!
9. Edit on the Go
Use apps like Lapse, Lightroom Mobile, VSCO, or Snapseed for quick tonal adjustments or film like edits while traveling. You can even create a consistent color style for your whole European gallery — perfect for social media storytelling.
10. Capture Details, Not Just Landmarks
This one is so important because everyone is going to have the exact same shot of all of the famous landmarks but by getting up close and personal you'll get more unique and personalized images showcasing your artistic eye: shoot close-ups of textures, café tables, street art, and florals. These small details tell the story of your trip and balance out the wide scenic shots.

Don't forget people are the point. Make sure you're capturing lots of images of your people whoever you're traveling with and all of the details of what they're wearing what they look like and what they enjoy most on these adventures.
