What to Expect at Your Vibrant Mexican Heritage Wedding at a Catholic Church in the West Valley, Arizona
I wanted to share some Logistics & Planning Tips for West Valley Brides:
Lighting the Architecture: Catholic churches often have unique outdoor stucco archways. And for this specific wedding I really wanted to showcase the harsh mid-day desert sun as it hits these spaces because that’s how the day felt, hot and gritty but romanticized. When I’m photographing in full sun I explain to the couple how that will affect their images: the shadows aren’t as flattering as soft light but it is romantic and edge. I also make sure to shoot with my settings to f/12 - f/22 which is camera talk for keeping everything super crisp and in focus, clear portraits like you see here.
The Cathedral Veil: One of my biggest tips for brides wearing cathedral-length veils during their church portraits. is to make sure it’s steamed or hung without wrinkles leading up to the wedding day. This dramatic accessory really brings together the Catholic iconography and makes the ceremony feel even more like a traditional ritual. I love love love to hold a veil for a foreground blur effect so the lace creates a romantic, dreamlike frame around the couple. And that with the full sun at this specific wedding really was the chef’s kiss.
Time Management for Church Timelines: I always like to remind couples that traditional Catholic masses have VERY fixed schedules. I really need to emphasize the importance of planning an intricate and detailed post-ceremony family portrait list inside or just outside the sanctuary before the parish transitions to evening confession or mass. For this wedding we had one immediately before and I think there was another wedding immediately after. Make sure your people know where to go and designate a friend to be on family wrangle duty, someone who knows each family well enough to gather the people but not necessarily be in every photo.
