Senior Photos at Papago Park | Group Graduation Session in Phoenix/Tempe, Arizona
Senior photos and graduation sessions are always a good idea. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a group of students I’ve taught over the past few years as an art teacher, and it’s truly such a compliment when former students hire me to take their senior portraits or graduation photos. There’s something incredibly meaningful about getting to document this season of their lives after watching them grow creatively and personally over the years.
This group of seniors chose to take their graduation photos at Papago Park in Phoenix during sunset, and the light could not have been more worth it. The area was a little crowded, which is pretty common for one of the most popular photo locations in Arizona, but overall it was easy to work around. On the rare occasion that someone ends up in the background of an otherwise perfect image, I can Photoshop them out if needed. As a general rule, though, I try to avoid relying heavily on AI generative fill or over-editing my photos. I prefer to preserve the authenticity of the moment whenever possible. That said, sometimes things happen beyond our control, so I’ll often provide both the original image and a more heavily retouched version if requested by the client — especially for graduation invitations, prints, or framed portraits.
Since I always value my clients’ privacy, these are only a few of the seniors who allowed me to share their images publicly. The full group was actually around 18 students. I absolutely love large group graduation sessions because there’s so much more variety in posing, movement, and storytelling. It becomes less about stiff portraits and more about documenting the experience of celebrating this milestone with your closest friends.
Group senior sessions can also be a great way to make professional photography more affordable since the session cost is shared among multiple people. While larger groups sometimes require a little extra time and coordination, they often save everyone money while creating a genuinely fun and memorable experience.
