Desert Sunset Magic: A Romantic, Vibrant October Wedding at Troon North | Ryan and Abby
Most people hear "golf course wedding" and imagine flat greens and predictable, generic, cookie-cutter ballroom shots. But when you mix an October sunset in Scottsdale with a baby blue and orange color theme, you get a sunsetgasmic experience that completely breaks the standard mold.
For Ryan and Abby’s October wedding at Troon North Golf Club, they took the classic desert aesthetic and dialed it up. As a non-traditional Phoenix and Scottsdale wedding photographer, I’m always chasing contrasts. This day perfectly balanced the romance, iconic Arizona desert vibes and highly connected friendships with a vibrant, sophisticated color palette that mimicked the sunset itself. chefs kiss. perfection.
The Venue: Upgrades, Sunset Views, and Troon North Realities
If you are currently touring wedding venues in North Scottsdale, Troon North should absolutely be on your radar—but you need an insider's look at the logistics. Nestled right against the foothills of Pinnacle Peak, the property offers a stunning backdrop of giant saguaros and dramatic boulder formations.
And what you actually need to know when planning a wedding here:
The Getting-Ready Spaces
Unlike venues with isolated, tiny bridal closets, the dressing rooms at Troon North are technically the club's public locker rooms and restrooms—but completely elevated. They are expansive, immaculately clean, feature large mirrors, and offer plenty of breathing room for your wedding party to relax, listen to music, and sip champagne without feeling cramped. Just know it’s a public space and you’ll want to make sure you have it cleaned up after you all get ready. One of my biggest regrets was not delegating this task to one of my own bridesmaids on my wedding day - which meant everyone who used the bathrooms after us saw the chaos of a bride on her wedding day.
The Evolving Ballroom View
Troon North’s view has recently undergone some new construction, meaning the exact view from the ballroom windows has shifted slightly compared to older photos you might find online. However, do not let that deter you. The layout still beautifully frames the desert landscape, and when that famous Arizona golden hour hits, the outdoor spaces are completely unmatched, just a few less cacti in the distance.
Golf Course Logistics
Shooting portraits on an active golf course requires a photographer who knows how to manage time, lighting, and safety boundaries (hi that’s me). We worked seamlessly with the venue coordinators to zip out on golf carts to the best desert-scapes, capturing those sweeping, open spaces while keeping the timeline tight and stress-free.
And of course a moment for the dress:

Behind the Lens: Chasing the Blue & Orange High Contrast
Ryan and Abby's color theme was an absolute dream for my desert obsessed style. They paired baby blue with striking orange florals and details, creating a complementary color scheme that popped effortlessly against the warm, dusty tones of the Scottsdale desert.
Instead of blowing out the background to make everything look bright and airy because that style is sooooo dated, I leaned into dramatic exposures. During their sunset portrait session, I focused on keeping the rich blues in the evening sky intact while using advanced lighting techniques to make their orange details look vibrant and electric. Posing them was all about movement—letting them walk through the cactus trails, catch the twilight breeze, and just enjoy being newlyweds while I captured the candid magic from a distance.
