Antigua Garden Wedding in Downtown Phoenix | Emotional & Candid Wedding Photography A.K.A.SkelbyFest2026

I literally don't even know where to begin for this wedding. It was a super emotional day. The bride's mom is no longer Earthside, and while she absolutely attended in spirit form—as you can see from the perfectly timed falling flowers during the vows and so many other moments throughout the evening—it was an honor to document this wedding and to hold space for both the grief and the pure joy of living life and finding love.

This day was the celebration and ceremony commemorating these two wonderful humans. They actually exchanged vows while her mom was still alive, and I was lucky enough to witness that as well. Because of that intimate history, this day was truly a day of celebration, enjoying each other, and it was just such a fun experience.

We started midday with getting-ready coverage at Antigua Garden in downtown Phoenix. I love this venue because not only do they have an upstairs room for the bride, but they also have a separate room downstairs for the groom or partner to get ready. Because of their setup system, the couple was able to get their entire reception decor installed and finished before the bride was even dressed. Anyone in the industry knows that venues allowing only two hours to set up before the ceremony is really not enough time to flip an entire space—unless you have a massive army of hired help. This couple thankfully had a lot of family and friends, but they were still able to go above and beyond because the venue gave them that crucial extra time to set up.

We made sure to build plenty of buffer time into the schedule for family photos, details, and private moments. I really like to encourage my couples to have a lot of built-in extras. That way, if we have to cut something, it's an easy choice to make. The day flows so much smoother when you have a detailed plan and buffer time; it allows for those raw, candid moments to appear because your photographer is actually able to slow down, watch, and observe the day as opposed to rushing from one pose to the next. When posing couples, it takes a few tries to get a natural look, and it helps immensely when the couple doesn't feel rushed.

I’m an authentic person and I get it, some people just don't enjoy getting their photos taken, and that's totally okay and honestly quite understandable, I’m more comfortable behind the camera these days as opposed to in front of it. It makes sense why people might feel uncomfortable too, they don't know what they look like, they don't know what it feels like, and it can become a bit of a survival mechanism to just rush through it. But I like to give my couples time to actually just enjoy each other. That’s where I see who they really are, what matters to them, and how they look at each other. Those are the exact images I'm searching for.
